Beatitude 6: The pure in heart
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God — Matthew 5:8
What does it mean to be pure in heart?
First of all, based on the progression of the beautiful attitudes, to be pure in heart means you are a believer who is filled with righteousness and mercy. This means a heart that has no bitterness, hatred, anger, gossip, resentment, jealousy — God is happy to see such a beautiful heart.
Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. (Psalm 73:1 ESV)
How then can you be pure in heart? The answer is in Psalm 119:9;
“How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word.”
The word of God is the only tool that can keep your heart pure. God has made available His word for everyone to know His commands on how to live right. You don’t have to live as dirt anymore.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8 ESV
To be pure in heart includes our thought, as Christians, we should make our thinking pure. Although there are times some impure thoughts come to our mind, then we have to learn to take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ according to 2 Corinthians 10:5.
Moreover, as you grow in your Christian walk, loving one another becomes easier because it comes from a pure heart and is not from pretension.
Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart. 1 Peter 1:22 ESV
Let us pray to the Lord for a pure heart as the psalmist;
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Psalm 51:10
Also note, only those who are pure in heart can be peacemakers.
